Hey y'all.
Here are 10 things I found interesting from the last week or so.
1/ Happy Birthday Blaise!
To start of this week's newsletter, I'd first like to give a big happy birthday to my friend Blaise, hope it was an amazing day!
2/ The Wonderful Malady of Escapism
Last week, I spoke about escapism. This week, I found another video on the topic by content creator Baron Ryan. The video is called The Wonderful Malady of Escapism. There’s a quote in it:
"Why escape? Because reality is cold. Fantasy's a blanket. So you ask as I have asked. There must be some way out of here. Delusion is a useful malady. Without it, we wouldn't be able to bear our inconveniences. It's inevitable that things don't turn out right in real life. So you got to make them right in art. And that's not so bad considering art is like dreaming in a way and dreaming is like living.
3/ Twyla Tharp
"Art is the only way to run away without leaving home"
Making art makes things right.
4/ The Escapism Economy
Another video on escapism I found this week is by content creator Cole Hastings. The video is called The Escapism Economy. He outlines its vicious cycle and offers a solution.
5/ On Not Escaping the 9-5
One of the common things that comes up when looking through videos related to escape/escapism is the idea of "escaping the 9-5." Yet, it's also interesting to read about different artists/writers' past and see what kind of day job they had. T.S. Eliot worked at a bank, Harrison Ford was a carpenter…
Austin Kleon writes about this in his book Steal Like an Artist. In Chapter 9: Be Boring (It's the only way to get work done), he has a subchapter called Keep Your Day Job. Why? He says a day job gives you money, a connection to the world, routine. Financial freedom leads to creative freedom. A connection to the world puts you in contact with real people who can teach you things. And routine keeps you in the groove, which is important. As he writes,
"Establishing and keeping a routine can be even more important than having a lot of time. Inertia is the death of creativity."
6/ Tim Denning x Jung
I've mentioned Jung in this newsletter a handful of times, talking about isolation, creativity, and assessing the path in front of you. Blogger Tim Denning posted a newsletter last week featuring a few powerful quotes by Jung.
"What you resist not only persists but will grow in size."
"The world will ask you who you are, and if you do not know, the world will tell you."
"I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become."
"The most intense conflicts, if overcome, leave behind a sense of security and calm that is not easily disturbed."
"The first half of life is devoted to forming a healthy ego, the second half is going inward and letting go of it"
"You are what you do, not what you say you'll do."
"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate"
7/ Liquid Death's Pure Sugar Ad
8/ Ryan Holiday x Mark Manson
Two podcasts. Back-to-Back. With two of my favorite writers.
Why Everything is F*cked — Manson on Holiday's podcast.
