Happy Friday everyone!
Here are 10 things I found interesting from the last week or so.
World Mental Health Day
To start this week’s newsletter, I’d like to celebrate (again) World Mental Health Day which was on October 10th. There are some great articles on The Player’s Tribune from athletes of all sports and backgrounds that are worth checking out!
Shepmates x Travis Kelce x Taylor Swift
One of my favorite Instagram pages, Shepmates, did a skit on Travis Kelce scoring a touchdown in the newly founded NFL (Taylor Swift Version). It’s gold. Check out the rest of their videos for other sports skits. It’s a gold mine.
Ogilvy 75 and Counting
Next, I’d like to share a PDF of quotations by David Ogilvy celebrating the agency’s 75th anniversary. After reading through this list of quotes, it might be time to purchase one of his books. If anyone can recommend one of his books to start with I’m all ears!
Kelvin Kiptum Breaks World Record
Congratulations to 23-year-old Kelvin Kiptum for breaking the world record for fastest marathon time (2 hours and 35 seconds) last Sunday at the Chicago Marathon. That’s 2:51/km, which is 1 second faster per kilometer compared to Eliud Kipchoge, who held the former record after his performance in the 2022 Berlin Marathon. It’s only a matter of time before one of them or someone else even shaves off another a second to crack the 2-hour mark—perhaps it happens in Paris next year?
Living in Beautiful Choices
Here is a screenshot of the book I’m reading: The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler. It is an excerpt from a book written by the main character within the book, marine biologist Dr. Ha Nguyen.
Love this quote. It reminds me of another passage by Epictetus in Discourses:
“You are not your body and hair-style, but your capacity for choosing well. If your choices are beautiful, so too will you be.”
We live in choices. Make them beautiful.
DJ Will Ferrell at USC
I feel like Will Ferrell is one of few stars who can get away with just showing up to frat row at USC and start DJ-ing. Regardless, whenever Frank the Tank shows up, you know it’s going to be awesome.
Atlanta Falcons Rooftop Camera
A few weeks ago, I shared a clip of Atlanta Falcons Bijan Robinson captured from the roof of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. This week, here’s another highlight of #7, again captured from this really cool camera angle and edited by the team’s Senior Director of Video and Broadcast, Austin Hittel. It’s perfectly done; all of them are. Furthermore, what’s perfect about this whole thing is the fact the retractable roof of the Falcon’s stadium literally opens and closes like the aperture of a camera. Pretty cool stuff.
On Escaping One Way or Another
I came across another great quote this week on the topic of escapism to add to the growing list. This one comes from writer Anaïs Nin:
“Reality doesn’t impress me. I only believe in intoxication, in ecstasy, and when ordinary life shackles me, I escape, one way or another.”
NBA Pre-Season Begins
The #1 pick of the 2023 NBA Draft, 7’4 Victor Wembayama, played his first NBA Pre-season Game this week. He scored a Spurs team-high 20 points in 19 minutes. Here are a few highlights and the box score from the game featuring the phenom free in the universe.
Running Progress!
To end this week’s newsletter, the last thing I’d like to share is I ran my first “half-marathon equivalent run” last Sunday. Not the fastest time, but I’m happy with my effort. On to the next week of training!
Enjoy the weekend and see you next Friday.
